Oneness in Diversity

Yesterday I attended a concert by Deva Premal and Miten with Manose and Maneesh de Moor in Hamburg, Germany.

It has been a while since they have been to my hometown and so everybody was very happy to be part of this gathering.

For those who do not know:  The concerts of Deva Premal and Miten are usually not so much a concert where you listen to the performance and then applaud.  It is more like a big celebration of joy where we sing along together and pray and laugh.  Deva Premal is from south Germany and was raised in the Osho tradition while Miten, born in Great Britain used to play rock music with people like Fleetwood Mac before he found his way into Deva’s community.  They have travelled the world together and although Hindu Mantras as well as Miten’s songs build the main part of their repertoire they are bringing Mantras and Chants from all kinds of cultures to their audience to celebrate the love together.  This time they are accompanied on their tour by Manose, a virtuoso flutist from Nepal and Maneesh de Moor, an accomplished keyboardist from the Netherlands.  It always is a truly heart opening experience to attend their concerts.

Last night’s concert was filled by a very sweet and happy energy and very intense.  We have been so immersed in the songs that we chanted each one endlessly.  Also they shared many stories of their own life and we all laughed a lot, too.  Lots of joyful tears were flowing and even Miten himself experienced an unexpected heart opening on stage which he expressed in giving thanks to a lot of people in the room.  Eventually the concert went on a whole hour longer than it had been announced.  I was utterly surprised when I noticed that we arrived back at our flat past midnight.

I am writing about this experience because it reminded me of how beautiful it is to come together as who we are and celebrate it instead of judging each other and trying to force conformity onto everybody.  Miten calls this celebrating the Oneness in Diversity and I really love this approach.

The fact that we celebrated it in singing together brings a strong aspect to it, also, as singing is not just a heart opening experience itself but it also gives you a voice.  On a gathering like I have been attending, last night, I was invited to experience how my voice, no matter if the singing came out perfectly or imperfectly, was always in perfect harmony with the ocean of sound that I was part of.  There was no right or wrong, no too loud or too silent, no too much or too less.  There only was beingness and the choice to be part of this beautiful experience or not – both valid choices, by the way.

My late friend Cloud Eagle, rainbow warrior and Pueblo chief from Nambé in Santa Fé, New Mexico, USA, used to say:

We all bring our unique colour to the rainbow, our unique part to the circle.  Without your part, without you the circle is not complete.  So, all you have to do is show up.”
