During our last walk through the residential area which with it’s pretty, single houses and gardens is located in my old neighbourhood, we saw posters:

So, after all these years I learn that the settlement next to which I virtually grew up is called Traun Settlement and this year it is celebrating its 80th anniversary!

I already took you on a stroll through this settlement, before, in the course of my blog post The Power of a Walk.  If you are following Kim’s and my Blog Heart’s Journey you may have explored this area also with us in the course of our blog post Discovering Urban Nature.

After a very kind communication with the festival committee my husband Kim and I had planned to celebrate together with the residents and friends of the Traun Settlement and to pop by for a visit.  But, alas, it turned out differently as I was lying in bed with a cold.

Thus, I unfortunately cannot present any photos from the party.  Therefore I am showing some from our last walk, there, and I will even take you on that stroll at the end of the blog post.

The Traun Settlement was founded in the year 1936 by Heinrich Otto Traun for the workers of his nearby stud farm.  In simple houses they could live, self-sustenance style, in the green.

Thus, equestrian care has a certain tradition in this area and until this day one can find many horse pastures in Iserbrook and Sülldorf, the quarter adjacent to the West.  So also in the Osdorfer Feldmark.

Next to the stud farm Traun owned a rubber products factory and was Social Senator of Hamburg during the years 1901 to 1908.

The character of former self-sustenance is still beautifully noticeable, today.  Along the walkways one can find delicious wild herbs, one or the other fruit tree, beautiful wild flowers and, of course, radiant sunflowers.  The tallest one was awarded during the celebration, by the way.  Also, a beekeeper is resident and we often encounter their bees and bumble bees throughout our walks.  Many fruit trees are stretching their branches over the fences of the prettily laid out gardens and the calm is just heavenly.

Certainly not least because of that the motto of the newly founded Siedlergemeinschaft Traun Iserbrook e.V. (Settlement Association Traun Iserbrook, a registered association) states:

Green must stay!”

-Siedlergemeinschaft Traun Iserbrook e.V.

A motto that meets the green image of the city of Hamburg and in my opinion may find its way into all cities.
